Key Takeaways

After completing this module you will understand the following key concepts.

How safety systems and tools can support moderation teams
What GS Defender and GS Bans are designed to do, and the core capabilities they offer
How DefenderNet functions as a broader safety system across communities
Where to access setup guides and full documentation

The role of safety systems and tools

Moderation teams often need to move quickly, stay consistent, and keep reliable records of harmful behavior across different situations. That can be difficult to manage manually, especially in active communities or when harm escalates across multiple spaces.

Safety systems and tools can help reduce that burden. They can support day-to-day moderation, improve consistency, strengthen recordkeeping, and make it easier for teams to respond to harmful behavior in a more organized way.

GamerSafer built some of these systems and tools with the real challenges faced by Discord and Minecraft moderation teams in mind.

Community safety systems and tools for Minecraft and Discord

To support moderation teams on Discord and Minecraft, GamerSafer developed two core tools: GS Defender for Discord and GS Bans for Minecraft.

These tools were built to help teams respond more consistently, manage moderation actions more effectively, and reduce some of the manual burden involved in day-to-day safety work.

Together, they support moderation workflows that benefit from better organization, stronger recordkeeping, and more consistent enforcement.

They also connect to DefenderNet, GamerSafer's broader safety system, which helps communities align on harmful behavior, share safety signals, and strengthen protection across participating servers.

Using GS Defender for Discord

GS Defender is a moderation and security bot for Discord communities. It helps staff manage safety and enforcement more efficiently through features that support both everyday moderation and higher-risk situations.

Depending on how your server is configured, GS Defender can help staff:

  • Ban, kick, mute, and warn members
  • Track notes, warnings, and moderation history
  • Review moderation logs
  • Support member and staff verification
  • Help protect communities against raids and destructive behavior
  • Access moderation records and metrics through the dashboard

It can also help teams align on violation categories and take action more consistently.

You can install and set up the bot directly through the dashboard: defender.gamersafer.systems

Common commands and usage

All commands must first be configured in the dashboard to work properly for your staff team.

/banBan a member and their Gaming ID from your server
/unbanUnban a member and remove the Gaming ID ban
/kickRemove a member from your server
/muteTemporarily prevent a member from speaking or typing
/unmuteRestore permissions to a muted member
/warnIssue a warning to a member
/list warnsDisplay past warnings on a member
/remove warnsRemove past warnings on a member
/noteAdd an internal note about a member
/list notesDisplay or remove past notes on a member
/remove notesRemove past notes on a member
/purgeDelete a set number of messages from a channel
/modlogsDisplay all moderation activities for that user
For full setup instructions and command details, refer to the Full GS Defender Documentation

Using GS Bans for Minecraft

GS Bans is a moderation plugin for Minecraft servers. It helps teams manage punishments, warnings, mutes, and player history in a more consistent and connected way.

Depending on how your server is configured, GS Bans can help staff:

  • Ban, unban, kick, mute, and warn players
  • Review punishment history
  • Add and review staff notes
  • Check alternate accounts
  • Use a punishment GUI for faster moderation actions
  • Migrate from other punishment plugins in some cases

Common commands and usage

/banBan a player with reason and category
/unbanUnban a player from the server
/kickKick a player from the server
/muteMute a player from the server
/unmuteUnmute a player from the server
/warn or /warningWarn a player from the server
/unwarnRemove a player's latest warning
/alts or /altcheckShow a player's alternate accounts
/historyView all punishments applied to a player
/punishOpen a punishment GUI for quick moderation
/gsbreloadReload the plugin configuration files

GS Bans is installed as a plugin on your server and requires configuration, permissions, and an API key to activate fully.

Installation steps

  1. Download GS Bans from the GitHub Releases Page
  2. Drop the .jar file into your server's /plugins folder
  3. Restart the server to generate configuration files
  4. Request an API key via the GamerSafer Discord or by emailing defendernet@gamersafer.com
  5. Paste the key into your keyinput.txt file
  6. Restart the server to fully activate
  7. Assign permissions to staff for safe usage of moderation commands
For installation steps, migration support, and full command documentation, refer to the GS Bans Documentation
Already using another punishment plugin?GS Bans supports migration from popular plugins like LiteBans, so you can carry over your existing punishment history. Contact us in our Discord for migration support.

DefenderNet as a broader system

DefenderNet goes beyond individual tools. It is a broader safety system created by GamerSafer, with support from SafeOnline, to help Minecraft and Discord communities respond to harm in a more connected, consistent, and effective way.

At its core, DefenderNet helps communities classify harmful behavior using shared language, recognize serious risks earlier, and strengthen coordination across participating servers. It was built to address a common challenge in online safety: harmful behavior does not always stay in one place. When communities work in isolation, patterns can be missed, repeat offenders can move between spaces, and moderators are often forced to start from zero.

By helping communities share safety signals and align moderation workflows, DefenderNet makes it easier to act earlier, spot repeat patterns, and strengthen protection across the wider network.

How DefenderNet enforcement works can depend on how a community participates in the network.

Community Guild (Non-partner Guilds)

In a Community Guild, punishments issued through the DefenderNet system are handled at the local level.

Community Guilds still receive built-in network protection through the Join Prevention Rule.

Reporting Partner Guild

In a Reporting Partner Guild, punishments issued through the DefenderNet system are handled with network-wide effect.

By sharing punishments on high-severity cases, DefenderNet protects all participating communities.

Coming Next

Safety systems and tools can support moderation work and they are most effective when teams understand how to identify risk, classify harmful behavior, and choose the right response.

If your team is ready to start using GS Defender or GS Bans, the next step is to review the setup guides, permissions, and documentation for your platform.

In the next module, we will look at handling appeals, including why appeals matter, how to review them fairly, and how they can support trust and accountability in your community.
