In this module, moderators analyze realistic scenarios that reflect situations they may encounter in online gaming communities and chat platforms. The purpose here is not only to spot obviously harmful behavior, but to strengthen judgment in situations where risk may begin subtly and escalate quickly.
These drills are designed to help moderators recognize early warning signs, assess severity, preserve evidence correctly when appropriate, and apply consistent protective action before harm grows. Real moderation often requires action based on behavior patterns and intent, not only on the presence of explicit material.
These case drills include realistic scenarios involving grooming, exploitation, sexualized content, and child safety risk. They are provided for moderator training and may be distressing to some learners.

Practice Lab Scenarios
A user writes to a child in a Minecraft community, which is linked to a Discord server and has mostly under-18 players: "You look really mature for your age. Do you want to come to my private chat?" Then, "I can give you better loot and a VIP status. But don't say anything for the mods or your folks, they don't get it."
A user asks players to upload photos, saying, "Hey guys, send me some pics of you! There is a new AI app that creates the funniest random pics of you." A number of child players send theirs, thinking it is a harmless community activity. The user then says, "Thanks, now I can make nude and spicy pics out of this. If you want out, DM me or else." A moderator spots the discussion and raises the concern that the member is using AI to nudify those images.
A player starts describing sexual actions and asking questions in that context, which makes a child playing the game uneasy. The child says they are under 18 and are not allowed to watch that kind of content, adding that they do not really know what is meant by it. The adult replies: "Don't worry about your age, it's okay to talk about it." The conversation continues despite clear signs the child is uncomfortable.
A user posts a sexually inappropriate GIF or meme in a Discord channel where under-18 users are present. The picture is framed as a joke or harmless reply that everyone should find funny. The user says, "It's just a meme, guys! It's not that serious."
During a game with voice chat, one player taunts another about how they sound like a kid. This user is a teenager but is still under 18 and therefore legally a child. The conversation continues in the Discord server and the one taunting demands, "You need to prove you're not a kid." They then suggest, "Let's move to a private call and let me see you with the camera on."
Many of the risks and violations described in these drills do not stay in one server. Harmful users may move between Discord, Minecraft, and other communities, test boundaries in different spaces, and continue the same behavior if moderators are working in isolation.

These scenarios show that moderation is rarely about one single decision. It often requires noticing warning signs, assessing risk, preserving the right information, taking protective action, and knowing when escalation is necessary.
